Express Hotel Review
Protea Hotel by Marriott Nelspruit

2 nights stay before Kruger
This is
our 6th stay at this property.
Property Facts
Brand: Marriott Bonvoy โ Protea Hotels
Official Rating: 4โ
Rooms & Suites: 92 rooms including larger king rooms
Setting: Located on the eastern side of Nelspruit / Mbombela, next to a large shopping mall.
Note: No public transport โ you need a rental car.
Location
A bit outside the center, surrounded mainly by a shopping mall and and other shops. No cafรฉ, restaurants or bar around or in wakable distance and no city life around โ but once inside, it
feels like a little oasis away from the hustle.
Front Office
Warm, personal and genuinely welcoming. Many agents still remembered us from previous stays. Check-in and check-out both full of friendly interaction and small conversations โ you feel like a
returning friend, not just a room number.
Unfortunately the new front office agent who checked us in, has never ever heared anything about PCI compliance. Instead of putting a blocker on my credit card for credentials, she wanted to
photocopy my card. When I refused that, she wanted me to write down the credit card details on a piece of paper. When I refused that as well, she called the supervisor, which also did not
know how to take a block and suddenly it was okay to pay at check-out.
Titanium Recognition
Full recognition. We could choose between points or breakfast as welcome amenity, upgrade granted to the highest room category. Door sealed with Elite VIP banderole and a handwritten welcome
card with local snacks (biltong, dried fruits, chips) waiting inside. Textbook example of how a Protea can do it right.
๐ Nights & Points
All points, revenue and night were credited correctly 24 hours after our stay to the Marriott Bonvoy account.
Room / Suite
Bigger king room with lots of daylight through a large window. African country chic meets local history with old photos decorating the walls. Floors are now tired and small signs of age and
renovations should be done soon but the atmosphere is still warm and welcoming. Bed quality excellent โ great sleep with soft pillows and a cozy duvet.
Bathroom
Functional and clean, but clearly the oldest part of the room. Low shower pressure and some limescale โ same as last year. Still fine, just due for renovation soon. Amenities basic but
everything spotless.
Housekeeping
Impeccable. Rooms perfectly cleaned and tidy. You feel the pride of an in-house housekeeping team โ friendly, greeting guests and working with attention and ownership rather than outsourced
routine.
F&B โ The Fig Tree Restaurant & Bar
Breakfast buffet generous with local touches and fresh presentation. Staff friendly, warm and attentive.
We had both nights dinner at the property. The first night buffet and the second night a la carte.
Dinner buffet again very delicious โ fresh, tasty and including local dishes (big plus).
A la carte dinner was a real highlight. We didn't expect such a high quality from the kitchen and beautifully presented plates.
Bar area is nice with a good atmosphere and super friendly staff โ cocktails by the pool after arrival very delicious and all in all a perfect start into Kruger mood.
Pool / Courtyard
Small urban-style pool inside the courtyard. Enough loungers and relaxed vibe. Great for a cool-down before safari.
Unfortunately no sunbeds.
Social Media
Rating:

(1/5)
Still inactive online. No meaningful presence despite having accounts. Missed opportunity considering the vibe and staff quality.
Conclusion
A charming Protea property with heart and soul. Staff make the stay special โ warm, personal and always up for a friendly chat. Despite some wear and tear, the hotel delivers a genuine oasis
feeling in the middle of Nelspruit. Perfect base to start a Kruger trip. Highly recommended and already looking forward to the next stay.
