Satara
Rest Camp, established in Kruger National Park's early days, was originally a ranger post before becoming a key tourist camp. Its name likely comes from an old Indian surveyorβs map.
Satara
Rest Camp is one of the most popular camps in Kruger National Park, known for its prime location in the central region, often referred to as "Big Cat Country." It is particularly famous for its
high density of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, making it an excellent choice for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. The camp has a traditional, rustic charm with large open spaces and
beautiful Mopane and Marula trees providing shade. While the facilities are not overly luxurious, they are well-maintained and offer a comfortable, immersive bush experience.
Location Summary
Satara is situated in the central plains of Kruger National Park, approximately 48 km (30 miles) from Orpen Gate. This region features open Savannah, attracting grazers like zebras,
wildebeests, and giraffes, which in turn draw many predators. It is well-positioned for game drives along key routes like the S100, H7, and H1-4, which are among the best roads for spotting
wildlife.
Accommodation Options at Satara
Satara offers a variety of accommodations to suit different budgets and preferences:
1. Bungalows β The most common option, these round, thatched-roof units come in different sizes and include basic kitchen facilities, air conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms. Some have
perimeter views.
2. Guest Cottages β Larger family-style units with multiple bedrooms, living areas, and fully equipped kitchens.
3. Guest Houses β Premium accommodations with multiple rooms, private patios, and excellent locations within the camp. These are ideal for larger groups or families.
4. Huts/Rondavel with no Kitchenette and no supplies β Budget-friendly options with communal kitchens, suitable for travelers looking for a more affordable stay.
5. Camping & Caravan Sites β For those who prefer a more rugged experience, Satara has designated camping areas with shared ablution blocks and braai (BBQ) facilities.
Check-in / Reception
Check-in this time was good, the agent was friendly and efficient. He asked for all the documents, and whilst checking us in, he talked and interacted with is and 1-2 minutes later, he handed
us the keys to our bungalow. A positive surprise to our last stay.
During our 5-day stay, we had some questions and to organize sine things with the reception. That was a little different story and it was crucial to whom you talked with.
Some people were top in helping and others were a pure disaster. So it really depends whom you are talking to.
Basically, all SANParks staff we encountered seemed rather unhappy and unfriendly. None of them showed passion or enthusiasm, nor did they go out of their way for customers.
Activities:
Private Night Drive & Bush Braai at Satara Rest Camp
We
booked a private night drive followed by a bush braai at Satara β and unfortunately, the night drive turned out to be one of the most disappointing experiences in over 26 years of safari
travel.
Our assigned guide, Yolanda, apparently the head guide of Satara, was by far the worst guide Iβve ever encountered. She was completely unmotivated, disinterested, and visibly annoyed that she
had to go out on a drive.
She didnβt spot a single animal despite a zebra and impala crossing the street, she did not even look around and didnβt comment on anything, and barely spoke two words in two hours. She
simply drove us around in silence β any Uber driver would have been more engaged and customer-oriented.
When we arrived at the bush braai site, things got even worse. There was no safety briefing, no instructions on what to do in case of animal encounters, and no explanation of the
surroundings.
This is not just unprofessional β itβs a serious safety issue, especially for international guests who may not know how to behave in the bush at night.
SANParks urgently needs to address this.
If the head guide acts like this and skips basic safety procedures, what can be expected from the rest of the team? Itβs a clear failure of training, leadership, and service attitude.
Sadly,
this experience reflects once more the passionless, complacent attitude often seen in government-run operations β no motivation, no accountability, and no customer focus.
The F&B at the bush braai vice versa was super delicious and amazing.
Cattle Baron, the restaurant in Satara is catering the braai with a chef and a waitress.
Their service was absolutely top and completely customer oriented.
Our Bungalow
For this trip, we booked a bungalow with two beds for 5 nights. The bungalow we were given was in the E Rondavel. The camp is arranged in circles.
The bungalow was old, and the furniture must still be from the very early days. Outside, there is a small terrace with two chairs and a table. The kitchenette is also outdoors. The cupboards
were okay and functioned well but none if them had some doors. So all food items needed to be stored in the rondavel itself or in top of the fridge, which could be secured from the monkeys.
This time the fridge/freezer combo was also outside the bungalow. The kitchenette is equipped with a microwave, kettle, and all necessary appliances, as well as basic cooking tools.
The rondavel itself is the typical design used in all SANParks camps. The room is basic and it has two small beds, this time no suitcase board was available and the small closet is not big
enough. You have to live out of your bags.
No decoration, no pictures, no desk, no frameβnothing. It is super basic!
The
bathroom is from the early days of the bungalow but offers all necessary amenities. The walk-in shower is big and has decent water pressure. The water heater are new and the water temperature is
great.
The
atmosphere of the bungalow is basic but good β typical Kruger safari style. However, renovations are urgently needed.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping at Satara Rest Camp was amazing again. They were super friendly and attentive, doing their job with passion and pride.
Even
though the bungalow was old and basic, it was always spotless, and the beds were made immaculately.
Food & Beverage (F&B) at Satara
The F&B concept at Satara Rest Camp is outsourced to Cattle Baron Group of Steakhouses.
The Cattle Baron menu is excellent and caters to everyone. Aside from a fantastic selection of meats, they also serve pasta, pizza, and other dishes. Prices are reasonable, and itβs easy to
eat here multiple times without issues.
In our eyes they have improved a lot in customer service since our last stay in February.
Staff was always super helpful, friendly and offered an amazing service.
The food was absolutely delicious and super fresh. Every night it was pleasure to go for dinner.
Park Shop
The park shop at Satara Rest Camp isnβt the biggest, but it is well-managed.
The souvenir section is okay but does not have everything.
The grocery section is fantasticβmore like a small supermarket. Thereβs no need to shop outside the park, as you can find everything you need here.
The food section is excellently managed and beautifully arranged.
Staff at the shop super friendly and helpful.
Other Facilities
The campβs pool is very large and decently sized. There are changing rooms and toilets available, as well as a few cabanas providing shade.
Mobile connection at Satara has improved.
Free WiFi is available at the reception, shop, and restaurant areas for guests only.
Our Summary
Satara is great for wildlife sightings, as it is located in Big Cat Country.
Reception staff service was poor, except for the Duty Manager, who was friendly and asked for our feedback.
The park shopβs food section is amazingβyou can do all your shopping here. The souvenir section is smaller but okay.
Cattle Baron Restaurant offers amazing steaks and a great menu. The food was delicious, but staff service was mixedβsome were great, while others urgently needed training.
The bungalows are old and basic but very clean with a good atmosphere. They are the typical round SANParks bungalows, and while they need renovations, they are still okay.
Overall, it was an okay stay. We liked the camp and would return.
