The Camp:
Twee Rivieren Rest Camp is the main hub and administrative heart of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, located right at the confluence of the Nossob and Auob riverbeds. Unlike most other camps in the park, Twee Rivieren sits directly on the border with Botswana and serves as the primary entrance gate for South Africa.
This is the busiest camp in the Kgalagadi, but also the most practical one. If you need supplies, fuel, decent infrastructure or medical help, this is where you’ll find it. It’s not the most β€œromantic” camp, but it’s extremely functional and strategically located.
The Atmosphere:
Twee Rivieren feels more like a small desert outpost than a traditional bush camp. There’s a constant flow of arrivals and departures, which gives it a slightly more hectic feel compared to camps like Nossob or Mata-Mata.
That said, once inside the accommodation areas, it’s surprisingly calm. The dry riverbeds right in front of camp deliver wildlife regularly, especially early mornings and late afternoons. The camp also has an own hide.

Accommodation Types Available:

Cottages
Standard self-catering cottages with fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and air-conditioning.
Usually sleep 2–4 people depending on the layout.
Some are specifically marked as family cottages (more beds / larger space).
There are accessible cottage options too with features for mobility-challenged visitors. οΏ½
SANParks.
Family Chalets & Family Cottages
Larger units for groups or families.
Typically offer more bedrooms or extra sleeping areas.
Also self-catering with full kitchen, air-conditioning and bathroom facilities.
Camp Sites
Stand-alone sites for tents or caravans.
Sites include braai facilities and access to communal ablution blocks with showers and toilets.
Some have electrical plug-points (bring extension cords).
You supply your own camping gear.
🧭 General Notes
These are all self-catering options β€” you bring and cook your own food unless you dine at the camp restaurant. (info see below)
Twee Rivieren is the largest and most fully equipped camp in the park, with better amenities (electricity 24/7, fuel, shop, pool) than other camps.
Our Accommodation:
The Family Cottages at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp are fully self-catering units designed for families or small groups who want space, privacy and practicality in the Kgalagadi.
These cottages sleep up to four people and feature two separate bedrooms with single beds. The layout allows proper separation, which is a big plus for families or friends sharing. The bedrooms are spacious, with solid wooden beds, bedside tables, luggage racks and high ceilings with exposed wooden beams, giving the unit an airy, lodge-style feel.
The cottage is air-conditioned, essential in the Kalahari heat, and the system worked well and effective.
The bathroom setup is practical and functional. There is a walk-in shower with glass doors, tiled walls and good natural light, plus a separate toilet, which is very convenient when multiple guests share the unit. Fixtures are simple but clean and well maintained.
The kitchen area is compact but well equipped for self-catering, with a fridge/freezer. The chillers and freezers work solidly β€” you won’t be hunting for cold storage when you get there. There is also a microwave, kettle, sink, cupboards, worktop space and basic utensils. Everything is indoors, which is welcome during extreme heat or windy conditions.
Outside, the cottage offers a private patio with a table and chairs, as well as a dedicated braai (barbecue) area under natural shade. This outdoor space is ideal for relaxed evenings and fits perfectly with the Kalahari self-drive safari rhythm.
The cottage has 24-hour electricity, lighting inside and outside, and is located within the fenced rest camp, making it safe and suitable for families.
Mobile :
Twee Rivieren is the only camp with good mobile signals.
WiFi
WiFi at Mata Mata camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is generally available via purchased vouchers at the shop or reception, with costs reported around R75 for 400MB. The connection is typically slow, limited to specific areas like the reception/shop, and is not always reliable.
Dining:
The restaurant at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp is the main dining option inside the camp and basically in the entire park.
The restaurant is good, food is decent and delicious, lots of choices in the menu. It is functional rather than fancy. Quality was consistent and good.
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Staff were always very friendly and pleasant.
The atmosphere is basic but relaxed and nice.
The Park Shop:
The shop at Twee Rivieren is one of those little game-changing details that actually makes life easier on a self-drive safari. It isn’t a boutique or a gourmet deli β€” it’s a well-stocked, no-nonsense park shop with a few souvenirs and that serves exactly the right purpose for travelers in a remote area.
The shelves carry a reliable range of small fresh produce, meats for braai, cold drinks, basic groceries and all the small everyday things you can easily forget at home β€” coffee, filters, rusks, biltong, toilet paper, batteries, sunscreen and insect repellent.
And don't forget the ice for cold drinks or the ice cream in this heat!
They also sell firewood.

Fuel Station:

The fuel station is from Total Engines and run by SANParks. It is in the middle of the camp and also offers a tire flating / deflating station.
It is highly recommended, that you deflate the tires to 1,5 bar when driving in the park.
Facilities & Surroundings:
There is a swimming pool, which is very welcome after long, dusty game drives. It’s simple but clean and does the job. It is actually the biggest and nicest pool.
Twee Rivieren interpretation Center:
The camp has an interpretation center, which informs the visitors about the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
They touch topics from history, culture, flora and fauna.
It is super modern and very well done.
Guests & Ambience:
Twee Rivieren attracts a broad mix of visitors: first-time Kgalagadi guests, seasoned self-drivers, families and international travelers. Because it’s the entry and exit point, turnover is high, which gives the camp a less intimate feel than deeper camps in the park.

Summary / Overall:

Twee Rivieren Rest Camp is practical, efficient and extremely well located. It’s not the prettiest or most atmospheric camp in the Kgalagadi, but it plays a crucial role and does it well.
Accommodation is solid, staff are professional and everyone was super friendly and helpful.
We think that there is a big difference to staff from Kruger.
The shop and restaurant is good.
The and wildlife viewing around camp is very good.
Would we stay again? Yes β€” especially as a first or last stop in the Kgalagadi.
Would we stay here for the entire trip? Probably not.
